30 Best Things To Do in San Diego in March: 2024
There’s so much to do in San Diego in March. It’s a perfect time to be in Southern California whether you are visiting for Spring Break or you are a local there are so many fun things happening.
Regarding San Diego weather in March, the average temperature is around 60ish degrees up to 75 some days. Most people wear T-shirts and shorts but bring your rain boots and rain jacket as we have been having a very wet winter in America’s Finest City!
Local San Diegans, though Museum Month is over, don’t forget you can get free admission to many museums through the Go Museums program at your local library. This program is only open to San Diego County residents.
As lots of people are visiting for Spring Break, late March can bring some crowds to our theme parks, so be aware of that when looking to visit a theme park! The best times to visit would be early March or wait until Spring Break crowds die down in late April.

1. Carlsbad Flower Fields
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are open from early March to early May every year. This is a great place to bring kids. You must pre-reserve tickets online. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for kids. Kids under 2 are free. The best time to visit is a weekday morning!
They have the fields timed to bloom at certain times. My favorite time to visit is the end of March or early April because most are in bloom then!
The tractor ride costs an additional $6 once inside. It tours you around the whole property with the option of being dropped off at the top and walking back down.
Don’t miss the Sweet Pea Maze or Santa’s Playground! The little elf houses are from Santa’s Village, a popular SoCal amusement park that pre-dates Disneyland. A family bought them on auction, refurbished them, and donated them to the Flower Fields for future generations to enjoy.
If you don’t want to pay for admission to The Flower Fields, you can also view them for free from Armada Drive in Carlsbad. This is very close to LEGOLAND and The Carlsbad Strawberry Fields.
You can get tickets here: https://www.theflowerfields.com/
You will need to reserve an entry time. They aren’t super strict about it. We were late last year and nobody cared they just let us in.

2. Japanese Friendship Garden Cherry Blossom Festival in Balboa Park
March is cherry blossom season! The festival this year is March 7-10, but you can catch the blooms before and after this date. I do not recommend going during the festival as it is super crowded. This is my favorite of all the March events!
You can check the bloom percentage online before going. Link here: https://www.niwa.org/cbw
We also check in on the blooms from the bridge that overlooks the garden (as you walk from Spreckel’s Organ to Plaza Panama).
Here are my tips for visiting:
- Grab a scavenger hunt on your way in. Kids will be into anything with a scavenger hunt!
- Spreckel’s Organ Pavilion is the closest parking lot. However, the parking tram at Balboa Park is fun and free! It lets off at Plaza Panama which is right near the gardens.
- The cherry blossoms are at the bottom of the garden. You need to do some switchbacks to get down there, but it is stroller and wheelchair friendly.
- We tried out the tea house lunch on our way out because I forgot our food in the car and everyone was hangry. The grilled salmon teriyaki bowl was amazing. Kids got hotdogs from the hotdog stands.
- Admission is $12. Kids 5 and under are free. We used our Balboa Park Explorer pass which is ~$230 for a family of 4 for the year and gets you into all the museums in Balboa Park! Worth the price.
3. Wild Kratts Live in Escondido
The Kratt brothers are coming to Escondido! If you’re not familiar with The Kratt brothers you are missing out. It’s a show on PBS Kids that goes into different animals and why they are awesome. Never do I feel less guilty about screen time than when The Kratt Brothers are entertaining my children. They end the show knowing more about animals than I do. Do you want to know how fast a peregrine falcon flies? I didn’t but my kids keep telling me.
Anyways, you can catch The Kratt Brothers on March 10th at The California Center For The Arts in Escondido. Link to tickets here: https://artcenter.my.salesforce-sites.com/ticket/#/events/a0S5c00000MGeMwEAL

4. Strawberry Picking Season
March is when U-Pick Strawberry Season begins. There are two places to pick in San Diego. I prefer Kenny’s Strawberry Farm up in Fallbrook. It’s super cute and very fairly priced. If you don’t want to drive that far there is also Carlsbad Strawberry Company near LEGOLAND.
Carlsbad Strawberry Company: If you choose to do Carlsbad Strawberry Company, go in early March. They get picked over in April. They have a tractor ride and a sunflower maze. The tractor ride is not included but the sunflower maze is.
Buckets are $12. They are small. I didn’t see signs anywhere that said no eating, so I assume the steep price covers sampling. If you just want to enter the field without a bucket it’s $5. Kids 5 and under are free.
It’s right off the freeway so it’s kinda loud and windy. Bring dark clothes you aren’t attached to. I had to throw away their shirts last year because they got so stained. The whole endeavor took maybe 30 minutes so you don’t need a ton of time! You do not need a reservation, you just show up!
Kenny’s: Kenny’s Strawberry Farm in Fallbrook is so cute and a much better value than Carlsbad. They haven’t posted their opening day yet, but I’ll watch for it and let you know on IG. There’s no entrance fee. You only pay for the strawberries you pick and it’s $16 for a large bucket (it’s pretty big!) and $7 for a small one. They said we could fill it to overflowing and if no strawberries dropped it was fair game. Make a free-timed reservation online before going. Link here: https://kennysstrawberryfarm.com/the-farm
No tractor rides or anything else to suck your money away, although they did have some tractors to play on! We brought our scissors for fast picking and it was a good idea. Otherwise, my kids would pull off the stems.
We didn’t see any food for sale here on a weekday but there was strawberry jam which we absolutely bought. The address is 953 Rainbow Way and it’s right off the 15 freeway. The drive was gorgeous too through green mountains going up on either side!
5. Beyond Van Gogh Del Mar Fairgrounds
Beyond Van Gogh is coming to The Del Mar Fairgrounds through April 12th. If you haven’t seen this event, it’s an immersive art experience where you can walk through the works of Van Gogh. Would be super great for exposing kids to art in a fun way. They also have the cutest coloring station that my kids love! Tickets are between $40-$76 depending on which show and the time you choose. Use code MARKET for 15% off.
They are also doing a partnership with The Fish Market next door which I recommend visiting even if you don’t end up doing Beyond Van Gogh. Dishes I recommend at The Fish Market: swordfish, Atlantic salmon, sourdough bread, the kids’ fish and chips (ended up finishing it, it was delicious), and the snickerdoodle brownie.
You can get 15% off your Fish Market order if you go on the same day as Van Gogh and show your tickets.
6. Touch a Truck Lakeside
If you have a kid that likes cars or trucks you have to try a Touch A Truck event! Ours is in Lakeside on Sunday March 3rd from 10 AM-3PM. Get tickets here: https://lakesidechamber.org/touch-a-truck
If you’ve never been to a Touch-a-Truck event, basically kids can touch, sit in, and even pretend to drive a number of trucks that show up. Usually they are staffed by the owners who get a big kick out of watching the kids go wild for their trucks. It’s the cutest event because what does a kid want to do more than just sit in a random bus? Kids are the best. Tickets are just $10/person.

7. Leprechauns and Live Music Seaport Village Mission Beach
This is a free event put on by Seaport Village in Downtown San Diego. They will have live music and green light tunnels. You can grab food from any of their nearby eateries and enjoy Irish music on St. Patrick’s Day! The event goes from 12-3 pm. More info here: https://www.seaportvillage.com/events/leprechauns-live-music
8. San Diego Padres Opening Day at Petco Park
The San Diego Padres Opening Day is March 28th against The San Francisco Giants! Their first KidsFest is Sunday, March 31st. If you’ve never been to KidsFest, families can arrive early to the game to enjoy bounce houses, running the bases, face painters, and more. They have a few of them throughout the season. More info and tickets here: https://www.mlb.com/padres/fans/opening-day
9. Circus Vargas
Circus Vargas is making its way around San Diego. It will be in National City from February 23-March 11th and then Mission Valley from March 15-April 8th. After that, it will be going to Temecula!
It’s a family-friendly show and there are no animals used in the acts. You can expect tickets to be between $35-$85 and find discount tickets on Groupon. There are no clowns, but lots of cool human tricks like unicycling, juggling, and more. They also have singing and live music!
The show is two hours long with a twenty-minute intermission. Ticket link here: https://circusvargas.com/

10. $25 Child Admission At LEGOLAND
LEGOLAND is offering $25 admission for children until March 10th! With the purchase of a full price adult ticket, you can bring a child for $25 (up to four children). You will need to act fast for this one as it won’t be around for much longer. Visit this link to get the deal.
They are also having a Dino Day promotion! On Sunday, March 3rd if you show up dressed as a dinosaur you can get into LEGOLAND for free. Yes, you read that correctly. Dinosaur costume = free admission on Sunday, March 3rd only!
11. St. Patrick’s Day parade on 5th Avenue and Laurel Street
From The St. Patrick’s Day Parade website: The San Diego St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Festival will be held on Saturday, March 16th, 2024, with activities and festivities from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Fifth Avenue and Laurel in Balboa Park. Rain or shine!
The Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. at 5th and Laurel then proceeds north to Upas, east to 6th, and south to Laurel Street. The parade will have nearly 100 entries including marching bands, military, firefighters, law enforcement, Irish community groups and businesses, volunteer organizations, and more. The parade is free, they will also have an Irish festival all day in Balboa Park celebrating Celtic culture!
The festival will run along 6th Ave from Laurel to Nutmeg from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The festival will host a variety of vendors, food, and information booths to shop and engage with. The festival area will also feature food, information booths, and vendors, and be an exciting place to meet friends and show your green. Festival entry fee for adults 21 and over is $10; under 21 and active duty military with I.D. will get in free.
Full entertainment line-ups of Irish music and dance will be available on two festival stages beginning after the parade. They are also offering an expanded children’s area this year!
You can find more information about the parade here: http://www.stpatsparade.org/
12. Plunge Underwater Egg Hunt
From The Plunge’s website: Join Plunge San Diego on Saturday, April 1st from 9:30am-12pm for our annual Underwater Easter Egg Hunt. This event features open swim, a giant floating obstacle course, underwater and dry-land Easter egg hunts, bouncy houses and local vendors. Plus, the Easter Bunny will make a special appearance for meet and greet photo opportunities! **The underwater egg hunt will include both floating and sunken eggs in the shallow end of the pool (2.5-3 feet of water) and a more challenging area for older children & adults in 6 feet of water.
Included: Each child will receive an Easter goodie bag after completing the underwater Easter egg hunt. General Admission tickets range from $20-$30/attendee. All guests must purchase a ticket to attend the event. Very limited tickets may be available for purchase at the door.

13. Roar and Snore Safari at The San Diego Zoo Safari Park
This is on my bucket list of things to do in San Diego! You can have a sleepover at one of the best zoos in the United States. Prices start at $160 and go up from there. They have an “all ages” option as well as an adults-only option and a Girl Scout option. This year also includes admission to The Butterfly Jungle!
Here’s the info from their website: Pack up your “trunk” for a sleepover adventure at the Safari Park! All sleepovers include camp activities, an after-hours look at the wild lives of wildlife, guided walks, s’mores around the campfire, dinner, an evening snack, and breakfast the following morning. Choose from several age-appropriate sleepover categories with their own themes.
More info and buy tickets here: https://sdzsafaripark.org/safaris/roar-snore-safaris

14. MJ The Musical
MJ The Musical will be at The Civic Center from March 5th-10th! I got to see this one up in LA last month and there are some mature themes and swearing and MJ’s typical moves. There is nothing overly graphic, though they do allude to an abusive relationship with his father. I would take a kid ages 13+ or go yourself on a date night! Tickets are around $70.
Info from their website:
He is one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Now, Michael Jackson’s unique and unparalleled artistry comes to San Diego as MJ, the multi Tony Award®-winning new musical centered around the making of the 1992 Dangerous World Tour, begins a tour of its own. Created by Tony Award®-winning Director/Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, MJ goes beyond the singular moves and signature sound of the star, offering a rare look at the creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted Michael Jackson into legendary status. MJ is startin’ somethin’ as it makes its San Diego premiere at the San Diego Civic Theatre in March 2024.
Rating: Please note guests under age five are not permitted to enter. All guests entering the theater, regardless of age, must have a ticket.

15. See the sea lions at The Children’s Pool in La Jolla
The seals begin to come to San Diego to have their pups around February 8th! Of course, this varies every year, but usually, you can catch them at The Children’s Pool in La Jolla through March as well. When we’ve gone there have been docents answering questions and making sure the seals and the people who want to see them stay safe and where they belong.
To find the seals, head to The Children’s Pool in La Jolla. We went on February 19th and there were 28 seal pups! I am sure there are more now.
16. Whale Watching for gray whales during their migration season
Apparently, the whales are going NUTS this year! You will be able to hopefully see a ton on a cruise. There are a few options, I have heard great things about City Cruises. They offered a discount for you to use, put in code SDMAMAS10 for 10% off your booking with them for any cruise (not just whale watching).

17. Bunny Train at Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo
We did this cute train ride for Christmas, now they are offering one for Easter too! They have rides on Saturdays and Sundays in March. Here is the info from their website:
Forget the ordinary Easter egg hunt! This year, whisk your little bunnies on a magical adventure aboard the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum’s Bunny Train on a journey through San Diego County’s picturesque countryside in a train decked out with colorful Easter cheer.
But the fun doesn’t stop there! Once you arrive at the Museum, a treasure trove of hidden eggs awaits in the grand Exhibit Building. Every nook and cranny will be bursting with colorful surprises! Children can trade their collected eggs for yummy treats and awesome prizes – the perfect reward for little egg-splorers.
And the pièce de résistance? Meet the Easter Bunny himself! He’ll be chilling in his charming garden, ready for cuddles, photo ops, and all the “Happy Easters!” you can throw at him. A photo memory to take home is included in your ticket purchase!

18. Color in a New Light at Fleet Science Center
We just got to test out this exhibit and we LOVED it. It’s upstairs at The Fleet Science Center. You can learn all about color and how it interacts with your world. The kids loved going inside the kaleidoscope tunnel! There are so many interactive elements, all three of my kids were completely enthralled. They’ve also left the giant ball pit from the last rotating exhibit that was there. The ball pit opens at 11 am, be sure to be the first one there as the line gets long quickly.
More info here: https://www.fleetscience.org/experiences/color-new-light
19. Leprechaun Run 5k / 10k in Pacific Beach

20. San Diego Restaurant Week
This one may be for you folks with older kids who sit still at restaurants, but San Diego restaurant week will be from March 3-10 this year.
Here is the info from their website:

21. San Diego Festival of Science
This one looks so fun! It’s coming to Snapdragon Stadium on March 2nd from 11 am to 5 pm and would be ideal for any kids who are into STEM (or any kids you want to get into STEM). It will be at Snapdragon Stadium. Make sure to check out the brand-new River Park while you’re there! Also, this event is completely free and no reservations are required. Parking is $10 and only clear bags are allowed. You can also ride the trolley. There is a stop right outside the stadium. Two kids ride free with one adult. Their website says they have a Pre-K area that will be run by our favorite museum SDCDM.
Here’s more info: The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering EXPO DAY is the largest event of its kind in Southern California. It’s a collective effort between industry, business leaders, government, community organizations, public outreach centers, academia, schools and school districts, and parents. The Festival began 16 years ago primarily science and engineering-focused, with a goal to provide experiential activities in these fields to diverse populations.
The overwhelming success of the formative years of the Festival proved to be a catalyst for what the Festival would swiftly evolve into – a comprehensive San Diego County community event that celebrates the diverse cultures, communities and populace of San Diego, and works to inspire the curious young minds of our region to become tomorrow’s STEAM leaders.

22. House of Ireland Lawn Program at Balboa Park
You know those little houses in Balboa Park? Well, sometimes they open up for amazing music and dancing! On March 17th from 11-5, they will be celebrating Ireland’s culture. Live music, dancing, and other Irish traditions take the stage while Irish stew and other tasty treats are served at the cottage. Would be a fun way to spend St. Patrick’s Day! They also have green beer and live entertainment!
More info here: https://www.houseofireland.org/
23. Tidepooling at Juan Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma Tide Pools
It is amazing weather for tide pooling in March. This is one of our favorite places to go. By the way, did you know a National Parks Pass will allow you to skip paying for parking here? Otherwise, it’s $15. Be sure to check for low tide times before going. They change every day, so google the specific day you are planning to go.
24. San Diego Theatre Month at La Jolla Playhouse / Balboa Theater in The Gaslamp Quarter
Did you know March is San Diego Theater Month? They offer discounted theater throughout San Diego for the entire month including the City Ballet of San Diego and shows at The Balboa Theatre. They have $15 tickets, $30 tickets, and $45 tickets. There are a few shows that look perfect for kids. I particularly am interested in the Puffs one and it looks like Broadway’s Aladdin is in the $45 group! That is a screaming deal for a real Broadway show.
Here is the full list of participating shows: https://sandiegotheatremonth.com/shows
25. The San Diego Botanical Garden
I love this place any time of year, but it is sure beautiful in March. True to form, San Diego takes a regular botanic garden and makes it awesome for kids. Grab a scavenger hunt when you come in to make sure you don’t miss anything. The best part is the pollinator’s garden. Your children can look for bees and listen to birds. The docents had a handout where the kids could count the pollinators and do “research.”
M-F they have free art projects in the Children’s Garden. We loved painting on the big canvasses and the giant chalkboard. Up past the old parking lot, you will find a second Children’s Garden with a train and sensory bins. This is a place we go with the grandparents a lot. Both grandparents and kids love plants! The garden is open Wed-Sun 10-5. Check their website for exact hours. Address: 300 Quail Gardens Dr, Encinitas, CA 92024. The cost for this spot is $18/adult and $10/kid.
Don’t miss the nearby park Olympus Park! It continually wins the best park with the moms on my IG page. The only downside is there are no bathrooms there so bring the travel potty! The parking lots is non-existent as well. Street parking only.

26. Ride Hydrobikes in Mission Bay
We recently did this for the first time and it’s SO fun. It’s the perfect way to get out and see animals without having to rent a boat or get wet. You can go in any weather and bring (almost) any age of kid. We left our 18-month-old home as she does not follow directions and would likely end up going swimming. You can rent the Hydrobikes through Aqua Adventures. They also rent SUPs and kayaks. This has been my favorite way to see the natural beauty of The San Diego Bay! Link here: https://www.aqua-adventures.com/lesson/hydro-bike/
27. The USS Midway Museum in Downtown San Diego / Waterfront Park
I highly recommend taking kids to this aircraft carrier turned museum. It’s the perfect place for kids! Here’s what you need to know when visiting with kids: Kids under 5 are free! There is an audio guide specifically for children. It was a big hit with our kids. This is a touch-everything museum meaning kids can sit in the control chairs and press all the buttons to their heart’s content.
All boat exits to the water are very well covered by thick glass and secure fences. My husband said I was nuts for even thinking about this, but I was legit nervous one of my crazy kids would fall off the boat, so these are the things I look for now.
There are elevators for strollers but you will have to park your stroller to explore the tunnels of the ships. There is an attendant to watch it.
Our favorite room was the miniature helicopter room with small-scale helicopter models right at toddler level. We had a few incidents where one child tried to break free and run back to that room. We also loved the anchor room where our kids had tons of fun climbing on the giant anchor chains. The docents were very kind and answered my children’s very specific questions about plane machinery. We spent two hours there but we could have easily spent three.
The cost is $34/adult and $22/kid. Kids under 4 are always free!
28. Visit Belmont Park Amusement Park
Belmont Park is such a fun seaside amusement park! It’s less crowded than the other theme parks and more budget-friendly as it is free to enter. You have the option to pay per ride or get their unlimited wristband for $60 for adults or $55 for kids.
The wristband covers not only the rides but also a large ropes course, laser tag, ziplining, and a whole host of other fun activities. You can easily spend a whole day here. Pair it with a visit to the nearby Bonita Cove Park and a sunset on the beach!
Belmont Park has a series of festivals throughout the year. Their Christmas light display is particularly wonderful as is the spring Belmont in Bloom. We love the Beach House restaurant nearby for kid-friendly dining.
29. Visit SeaWorld San Diego’s Seven Seas Food Festival
This one is for my Seaworld annual pass holders. They have a Seven Seas Food festival! Here are the details from their website: Sip and sample your way around the world of international flavors, craft beers, cocktails, and wines, and enjoy live musical performances along the way.
From foodies to families, everyone will find tasty delights among more than 100 food and drink offerings featuring all-new flavors with unique recipes from around the world. Revitalize your taste buds on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, March 1st – April 28.
30. Eat at Corvette Diner in Liberty Station
We love eating at Corvette Diner. It’s super kid-friendly, there are performances every half hour, and they do free balloon tying. They do not take reservations so put down your name when you arrive at Liberty Station and then go wander around until they text you.
