Key Takeaways
• LEGOLAND California Resort offers two themed hotel options built in 2013 and 2018 that both include complimentary breakfast buffets and early park access for hotel guests.
• The LEGOLAND Hotel features a disco elevator, nightly family dance parties, and an evening buffet restaurant, while The Castle Hotel offers a larger pool with hot tub and outdoor playground.
• Both hotels share the same parking lot and provide LEGO building areas in their lobbies, themed rooms with separate bunk bed areas, and access to both pool facilities regardless of which hotel guests book.
• Hotel guests receive early park access though only three rides operate during this time, while staying until park close around 4 pm provides shorter wait times.
• LEGOLAND Annual Passholders receive significant hotel discounts, and bundled packages combining park tickets with hotel stays frequently offer the best value.
Which Hotel To Book, The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel or The LEGOLAND Hotel?
Your choices are The LEGOLAND California Castle Hotel OR The original LEGOLAND Hotel. They built the original hotel in 2013 and The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel in 2018. They are stationed on either side of the LEGOLAND California park entrance and share the same parking lot.
Both offer easy park access, free breakfast buffet, and different themed rooms. But which LEGOLAND California hotel is better? The answer is… it depends. I’ve stayed at both hotels and they both have their strengths. Either one you choose will be an AWESOME trip for your family. In order to properly make that decision, I will now pit both hotels against each other and see who comes out ahead!
By the way, my name is Camille and I run San Diego Mamas. I have three kids and we are LEGOLAND passholders that go frequently! This is one of many of my posts about LEGOLAND Resort so feel free to browse around and send me a DM on Instagram if you have any questions. See all LEGOLAND posts.

Why Stay in a LEGOLAND Resort Hotel?
These hotels just GET what it’s like to be a parent with young kids. At every turn, my kids were entertained, the rooms were perfectly suited for families (separate bunk bed areas!) and they had picky eater options at every buffet. I’ve stayed at their partner hotels too, such as the Sheraton Carlsbad behind LEGOLAND and we had way more fun at The LEGOLAND hotel. Though the Sheraton does have their own LEGOLAND entrance, so if budget is a consideration, it’s not a terrible option.
The Strategic Room Location Hack That Changes Everything
Most families don’t realize that room location at LEGOLAND hotels can dramatically impact your vacation experience beyond just proximity to elevators. Here’s what savvy parents know:
Ground Floor Castle Hotel Rooms Near the Playground
Book a ground-floor room adjacent to the outdoor playground at Castle Hotel and you get a awesome perk: you can lie on your hotel bed while watching your kids burn energy on the playground through your patio door. This setup is perfect for:
• Parents who need a break but want visual supervision
• Families with kids who have different energy levels (one napping, one playing)
• Early risers who hit the playground before breakfast crowds
• Evening wind-down when kids need one more burst of activity
Lobby-Adjacent Rooms at LEGOLAND Hotel
Request a room near the lobby to access the two LEGO building areas and pirate ship castle playground within seconds. This proximity means:
• Quick trips back to the room for forgotten items during lobby play sessions
• Easy access for early morning builders before breakfast reservations
• Parents can tag-team (one supervises in lobby, one preps kids in room)
The Pool View Strategy
While pool-view rooms cost more, they pay dividends when you can monitor pool conditions from your window—checking crowd levels before committing to suit up your kids.
Okay now for what you’ve been waiting for… the competition!

Best Lobby: LEGOLAND Hotel
This was a tough one, but ultimately the LEGOLAND Hotel wins because of their spacious hotel lobby with TWO LEGO building areas and a pirate ship castle playground. The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel does have a slide in the lobby which the kids enjoy as well.
BOTH lobbies will forever ruin future hotel lobbies for you because checking into your hotel while your child is amused by a LEGO building area is simply the best. They have me and my husband wishing for LEGO building areas and a play area for the kids at every hotel we stay in in the future.
We stayed at a nice all-inclusive Mexican resort shortly after we visited LEGOLAND and as we were checking in, our kids were running around the lobby. My husband and I both turned to each other and said “Want to know what would be GREAT right now? A giant pile if LEGO.”

Best Pool: The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel
The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel pool area is much bigger and it has a hot tub. There are also water features that dump water on the kids. Both pools feature LEGO bricks to play with and complimentary towels. The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel also has a playground next to the pool and an outdoor movie screen. No outdoor playground at other hotel.
Extra bonus: If you book a room on the ground floor NEXT to the playground you can lie on your hotel bed while your kid burns off all their energy. Both pools are open to guests of both hotels, for example if you stay at LEGOLAND Hotel you can also swim at The Castle Hotel.
Pool Amenities Comparison Chart
| Feature | Castle Hotel Pool | LEGOLAND Hotel Pool |
| Hot Tub | Yes | No |
| Water Features | Dump buckets | Basic fountains |
| Outdoor Playground | Yes | No |
| Movie Screen | Outdoor screenings | No |
| LEGO Bricks | Yes | Yes |

Best Entertainment: LEGOLAND Hotel
While both hotels offer plenty of entertainment and shows, the award goes to The LEGOLAND Hotel because of their kid dance party every night and their disco elevator. I don’t want to spoil the surprise for the disco elevator, but go check it out no matter which hotel you stay in. It’s a party and may end up the highlight of your San Diego vacation. The Castle Hotel has a magic wizard elevator, but IMO it’s not quite as fun.
They also have a designated room for a family dance party that happens nightly. They have a real DJ and a massive disco dance floor. It was packed every night and we definitely had as much fun as the kids!
Daily Entertainment Schedule Worth Planning Around
| Activity | Location | Why It Matters |
| Nightly Dance Party | LEGOLAND Hotel | Real DJ, massive disco floor |
| Disco Elevator | LEGOLAND Hotel | Surprise party experience |
| Wizard Elevator | Castle Hotel | Magical effects show |
| Character Meet & Greets | Both hotels | Check lobby schedules daily |
| Lobby Shows | Both hotels | Evening entertainment options |

Best Themed Rooms: TIE with slight edge to LEGOLAND Hotel because of Ninjago
This one depends. Both hotels offer different themes in their rooms. If you have a kid that loves wizards and knights, The Castle Hotel will be your best bet. You can book a Royal Princess Deluxe Suite, Wizard Room or a Knights and Dragons room. However LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Friends, DUPLO Rooms, and the Pirate theming are all at The LEGOLAND California Hotel.
Both have rooms that feel brand new and the standard room comes with one huge King bed and two bunk beds. The bunk beds are slightly removed from the parent bed so it feels quite comfortable and spacious even with young children. They have a trundle bed that goes in the kid room so it slept all three of our kids quite comfortably.
LEGOLAND Hotels Room Theme Comparison
| Theme | Hotel Location | Best For |
| Ninjago | LEGOLAND Hotel | Action-loving kids ages 6-10 |
| Royal Princess | Castle Hotel | Princess fans and fantasy lovers |
| DUPLO | LEGOLAND Hotel | Toddlers and preschoolers |
| Knights & Dragons | Castle Hotel | Medieval enthusiasts |
| Pirate | LEGOLAND Hotel | Adventure seekers ages 5-12 |

Best Food: LEGOLAND Hotel
This one is niche, but I find buffets easier with kids. LEGOLAND Hotel offers an evening buffet at Bricks Family Restaurant while The Castle Hotel is a sit down restaurant in the evening. I noticed they rotate dishes served at the buffet so it’s not the same thing every night! The complimentary breakfast buffet is the same at both hotels.
BREAKFAST IS INCLUDED WITH YOUR STAY EVERY NIGHT. This is not publicized well enough in my opinion so now you know. Make a reservation because it gets crowded. The breakfast buffet has a TON of options, I even was able to get a whole Mexican breakfast which is my favorite!
This is a huge plus and should be considered when deciding to stay here or off-property. There are a few hotels like The Sheraton Carlsbad behind LEGOLAND with its own entrance. We’ve stayed there too, it’s worth the extra cost to stay at the themed hotels.
Breakfast Buffet Hidden Gems Worth Finding
| Station | Hidden Option | Pro Tip |
| Omelet Bar | Custom creations with 12+ toppings | Order first, then browse while cooking |
| Mexican Corner | Full chilaquiles and breakfast burritos | Rotates daily. Ask staff schedule |
| Waffle Station | LEGO brick-shaped waffles | Kids can pour their own batter |
| Beverage Area | Fresh-squeezed orange juice | Located separately from soda fountain |

Best Hotel Gym: LEGOLAND Castle Hotel
It’s bigger and has more equipment. However they are both pretty standard, weights, treadmill etc. Hours are good as well.

Other things to know about The LEGOLAND Hotels
There is a treasure hunt in both hotels for young explorers! Use the QR code on the box in your room to get started. Find the numbers in a scavenger hunt throughout the themed hotels and then use the code to open the treasure box in your hotel room. Hotel guests can do this scavenger hunt every day because they refill the treasure chest daily!
Both hotels offer early access for LEGOLAND Park to hotel guests, however only three rides are open so the lines get pretty long quickly. An even better bet is to stay until park close because things empty out around 4 pm most days. Be aware that all restaurants in LEGOLAND close early, so make a reservation at the buffet for right after LEGOLAND’s close so you aren’t waiting until 9 pm for dinner.
Early Park Access vs. Park Close Strategy
| Time Period | Rides Open | Crowd Level |
| Early Access (hotel guests) | 3 rides only | Long lines quickly form |
| Regular Hours (10 AM – 4 PM) | All attractions | Peak crowds |
| 4 PM – Close | All attractions | Minimal waits |
| Park Restaurants | Close early | Book hotel buffet after close |

What to Not Miss at LEGOLAND California Resort
There is so much to do at LEGOLAND, but make sure to check out the new driving schools, the new space-themed land with new indoor family coaster (coming March 2026!), Sea Life Aquarium, The Ferrari Build and Test, the newest land Dino Valley, LEGO Duplo Playground, and Pirate Reef. It’s also a certified Autism center and I have heard countless stories that their staff is wonderful with this group of kids.
Miniland USA holds a LEGO version of San Diego complete with LEGO models of Petco Park, Coronado Bridge, Rady Shell, and more in their LEGO model of the city. Don’t miss the hands-on STEM-based experiences in all of their building areas!
The LEGOLAND Water Park has a raft river with floating LEGO bricks, a Legends of Chima wave pool, tons of water playgrounds, water slides and more! Here are all my tips on the LEGOLAND Water Park!
The 4 PM Park Exodus Strategy: When Hotel Guests Win Big
While LEGOLAND promotes early park access for hotel guests, the real magic hour is the opposite end of the day. Parks experience a dramatic exodus starting at 4 PM that most hotel guests miss.
Why 4 PM Changes Everything:
• Day-trippers start leaving to beat traffic and make dinner reservations
• The breakfast buffet closes at 10:30 AM, pushing day guests into expensive park food by 4 PM
• Young children hit their energy wall mid-afternoon
• Non-hotel guests face 45+ minute drives home
The Hotel Guest Advantage Window (4 PM – Close):
Ride Strategy:
• Popular rides drop from 45-minute waits to walk-ons
• Ninjago, Coast Cruise, and Driving School become instantly accessible
• You can re-ride favorites 3-4 times in the final hour
The Energy Management Formula:
• Morning: Hit park at rope drop, ride 2-3 attractions
• 11 AM – 3 PM: Return to hotel for pool time and naps
• 3:30 PM: Re-enter refreshed park with snacks
• 4 PM – Close: Dominate empty park with energized kids while day-trippers drag tired children to parking lots
The Dinner Timing Hack:
Make buffet reservations for immediately after park close (usually 6 PM or 7 PM depending on season). This prevents:
• Waiting until 9 PM for dinner (park restaurants close early)
• Hangry meltdowns between park close and late dinner
• Competing with the dinner rush at 5 PM
Photo Opportunities:
The 4 PM – close window offers the best photo backdrops without crowds photobombing every shot. Miniland USA is particularly stunning in late afternoon light with zero crowds.

MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER
#1 Both LEGOLAND California hotels include complimentary breakfast buffets with extensive options including omelet stations, Mexican breakfast corners, and LEGO-shaped waffles, which represents a significant daily savings of $25-40 per person compared to off-property hotels.
#2 The 4 PM to park close window offers better ride access than early morning hotel guest hours because only three rides operate during early access while all attractions run with minimal wait times during the late afternoon exodus when day-trippers leave.
#3 LEGOLAND Hotel wins for entertainment with its disco elevator and nightly DJ dance parties while Castle Hotel dominates pool amenities with a larger pool area, hot tub, water dump features, and adjacent outdoor playground.
#4 Room location strategy dramatically impacts your experience with ground-floor Castle Hotel rooms near the playground allowing parents to supervise from their beds and lobby-adjacent LEGOLAND Hotel rooms providing instant access to LEGO building areas.
#5 The daily treasure hunt scavenger hunt gets refilled by housekeeping between 10 AM and 2 PM transforming what most families treat as a one-time activity into a multi-day ritual by timing room departures and returns around the reset schedule.
MINI GLOSSARY
LEGOLAND Annual Passholder: A yearly membership that provides unlimited park admission and significant hotel discounts, particularly during off-season periods when savings on hotel stays can offset the pass cost.
Early Park Access: A hotel guest perk allowing entry to LEGOLAND California before general admission, though only three attractions operate during this window, which can result in longer wait times than later in the day.
Bricks Family Restaurant: The buffet-style dining venue at LEGOLAND Hotel offering complimentary breakfast to all hotel guests and rotating dinner menu options that differ nightly.
Themed Room Suites: Specially decorated hotel rooms featuring LEGO intellectual properties like Ninjago, Pirates, DUPLO, Knights & Dragons, or Royal Princess, with separate bunk bed areas designed for children.
Treasure Hunt Scavenger Hunt: A daily in-hotel activity where guests use QR codes to unlock clues, search for numbers throughout the hotel, and open treasure chests in their rooms that housekeeping refills each day.
FAQ
Can guests of one LEGOLAND hotel use the pool and facilities at the other hotel?
Yes, both pools are open to guests staying at either hotel. Families staying at the LEGOLAND Hotel can swim at the Castle Hotel pool and vice versa. This means you get access to both the larger Castle Hotel pool with hot tub and the LEGOLAND Hotel pool area, giving you variety during multi-night stays.
What time should I make breakfast reservations to avoid crowds?
The breakfast buffet gets extremely crowded between 8:30 AM and 9:30 AM when most families with young children arrive. Book either a 7:30 AM reservation if you want to eat and get to the park early, or a 10 AM reservation if you prefer a slower morning. The buffet closes at 10:30 AM, so late reservations mean less crowding but less time to eat leisurely.
Are the LEGOLAND hotels worth the extra cost compared to nearby hotels like the Sheraton Carlsbad?
For families with young children who are LEGO fans, the themed hotels offer significantly more value despite higher prices. The included breakfast buffet saves $25-40 per person daily, the in-hotel entertainment keeps kids engaged during downtime, and the separate bunk bed sleeping areas provide better rest for parents. Partner hotels lack these family-specific amenities even though some offer park entrance access.
How does the treasure hunt work if we’re staying multiple nights?
Housekeeping refills the treasure chest in your room daily during morning cleaning rounds, typically between 10 AM and 2 PM. This means you can complete the scavenger hunt once per day of your stay. The hunt itself involves using a QR code in your room to get started, finding numbered locations throughout the hotel, and using those numbers to unlock the treasure box.
What’s the best strategy for experiencing both hotels during one visit?
Stay at one hotel but make dinner reservations at the other hotel’s restaurant, which gives you legitimate access to explore the other property. Use pool time to visit the Castle Hotel pool if staying at LEGOLAND Hotel, or vice versa. Both lobbies welcome exploration, so visit the LEGOLAND Hotel to experience the disco elevator and dance party even if you’re staying at Castle Hotel, and check out the Castle Hotel’s wizard elevator and larger pool area regardless of where your room is located.
