Julian Apple Picking: 8 Best Orchards for U-Pick

Fall means one thing in San Diego: apple season in Julian. Nothing beats a day trip from San Diego to enjoy the fresh mountain air. It’s the closest thing we get to actual seasons here in Southern California, and I am not about to let a little heat stop me from wearing my flannel for the photos (more on that in a second).

I’ve been tracking opening dates for all the Julian u-pick apple orchards so you don’t have to stalk eight different Instagram pages like I do every August. Fair warning that this is a stranger year than usual: one orchard has already quietly opened, one is running weeks behind on apples, and a few still haven’t said a word. Here’s what’s opening when for the 2026 season, plus my plugs for pie, gold mining, and Fort Cross because apple picking realistically takes only about 30 minutes and there are lots of other things to do in the Julian area. These are tiny working farms and a hot week or a thin crop can move a date overnight, so I’ve linked each one below. Always check before you take the day trip to drive up the mountain. The apple-picking season can be unpredictable and changes year to year.

The 2026 Julian Apple Orchards

Volcan Valley Apple Farm

Opens Sunday, September 6. This is our personal favorite and the one date I can tell you with total confidence, it’s confirmed on their site. They’re open Labor Day Monday as well, then Friday through Sunday into mid-October, 9 am to 4:30 pm. Admission is $5 per person and picking bags are $20. It’s bigger, has seven apple varieties on a trellis system so even toddlers can reach the fruit, and the whole point of your visit is just picking apples, no add-on experiences required. Do not skip their apple cider. Check volcanvalleyapple.farm or @volcanvalleyapplefarm before you go. Note that it’s a bit of a drive from downtown Julian to Volcan Mountain but it’s worth it for fresh apples!

Peacefield Orchard

Open now, they did a soft opening Saturday, August 22. Yes, already. This is one of the oldest orchards in Julian, home to a Granny Gravenstein tree that’s been producing longer than any of us have been alive. Picking is by reservation, with Saturday time slots at 9, 10, 11 am or noon, plus a few midweek slots in September. It’s $5 entry per person and $20 for a half-peck bag, cash or Zelle only, so hit an ATM before you head up. They’re expecting to close somewhere between late September and mid-October. It’s small and sweet, so go early before the season’s picked through. Book and check current dates at 3803wynolaroad.com. They run a mailing list rather than an Instagram, so sign up there for ripening updates.

Julian Farm & Orchard

Farm reopens September 4, but the apples are running late this year. Read this one before you build a September trip around it. Their early-ripening apples didn’t produce this year, so they’re now anticipating U-Pick apples starting early-to-mid October. The farm itself reopens Friday, September 4, open Friday through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm, but picking is only available with an Apple Tour reservation and general admission does not get you into the orchard. This one has more going on, hayrides, a petting zoo, a pumpkin patch, U-Pick berries. Just know you’ll end up paying for each individual thing, so budget accordingly. Watch julianfarmandorchard.com or @julianfarmandorchard for the apple tour release.

Crosscut Farm and Orchard

UPDATE: Crosscut has sold the farm and is not doing U-Pick this season. Please don’t plan a 2026 trip around them. I’m leaving the rest of this section up because it’s a lovely operation and I hope it comes back under the new owners, but for this fall they’re out.

Still no 2026 date, historically mid-to-late September. A true Mom and Pop operation. Reservations are required and your ticket includes a fresh cider pressing demo and a quick lesson on apple farming, which the kids love. It’s so fun to get to do a deep dive into how apples are harvested and made into cider! They usually only open for about a week and cater to small groups. This is the one orchard on the list that hasn’t posted anything for 2026 yet, so keep an eye on crosscutfarmandorchard.com and their socials, linked at the bottom of their page, and book fast when a date drops.

Ranchita del Reo

Opens Saturday, September 26, and booking is already open. A family farm with a more private feel, running from that last week of September through the first of November, Friday through Monday, 10 am to 2 pm. This one is reservations only, no walk-ins and no public entry, so book before you drive out. Also worth knowing: no pets at all, not even left in the parking areas. They grow later-ripening heritage varieties, so they’re a great option once the earlier orchards have picked out. Book at ranchitadelreo.org or follow @ranchitadelreo.

Mesa Blooms

Opens Friday, October 2. The sister orchard to Ranchita del Reo, and the only orchard actually in downtown Julian, right across from the high school and county library at 1711 Hwy 78. Friday through Sunday, 9 am to 4 pm, or until that day’s ripe apples run out. Good news for the spontaneous among us: walk-ins are welcome, no reservation needed. It’s $20 per person, including any kid over 1, and that gets you a quarter-peck bag plus admission. There’s no admission without buying a bag, and it’s cash or Venmo only. No pets. This is the one to save for later in the season once the earlier orchards have picked out. Confirm the day’s status at mesablooms.org or @mesa_blooms.

Julian Mining Company

No 2026 date posted, but sweet varieties usually land mid-September. This is my pick for a spontaneous Saturday, because it’s drop-in only with no reservation needed, which is genuinely rare this year. They have over 1,500 apple trees, and their site says the sweet varieties come in around mid-September with the later ones around mid-October. Honestly though, the apples are almost the side quest here. The real draw is gold panning, gem sluicing, tomahawk throwing, a train ride through a faux mine tunnel, and a whole pile of farm animals. They’re open to the public weekends only, at 4444 Highway 78. Check julianminingcompany.com before you head up.

Apples and Art Orchards

No 2026 date posted yet, historically from the months of September into October. A small orchard at 1052 Julian Orchards Drive, right up the road from Volcan Valley, so it’s easy to pair the two. Reservations are required here, so it’s not a drop-in, and they take groups by appointment. Nothing announced for 2026 yet, so watch applesandartorchards.com for their season dates.

Apple Lane Orchard

U-Pick is by reservation only, and their next date is Saturday, September 12. Apple Lane is a small family run orchard right off Julian’s Main Street, and their old fashioned cider is the one you’ll spot all over town. Unlike most of this list they are not a drop-in farm: you reserve your spot and they release dates as the fruit is ready, so follow @applelaneorchard for harvest updates or call them at 760-765-2645. It’s $15 per person and that includes a small peck of apples to take home. The orchard is regeneratively managed, meaning no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, which I appreciate when my kids are eating apples straight off the tree. The owner is a mom herself and she walked our kids through the rows and showed them exactly which apples to go for. We visited Apple Lane as guests of the orchard.

Apple picking season moves fast and it’s genuinely easy to miss because it’s still hot in late August and you’re not thinking about fall yet. Dates shift with the weather right up to the last minute, so check the links above before you load the car. I’ll also repost updates as they drop on my page, so keep an eye there too.

Don’t Skip Pie Testing on Main Street

Once your bags are full, head down to Julian’s Main Street for the real main event: apple pie testing. Get there early in the day because the lines get long by the afternoon, and yes, it is socially acceptable to have three slices before 10 am. Walk the historic Main Street while you’re at it. The Town Hall, the Pioneer Museum, and the candy shop are all worth a stop. I think the best apple pies come from MOMS but others disagree and love Julian Pie Company. You’ll have to test them and tell me which you think is best!

Fort Cross Is Worth The Detour

If you only have time for one non-apple activity, make it Fort Cross Old Timey Adventures. It’s a small business but they do such a good job of making things fun for kids and they are always having cool events going on. There’s tomahawk or axe throwing, archery, a petting zoo, and a reptile experience packed into one reservation, and it’s genuinely fun for both the older and younger kids. Grab your ticket online ahead of time and bring a picnic lunch or eat at California Mountain Bakery nearby!

Quick Tip Before You Go

It is warm in Julian, way warmer than you’d expect for a fall photo backdrop. Leave the flannel at home, or bring it just for photos and change right back out of it. You will be sweating through an orchard in September. This is San Diego, not the East Coast.
