1. Art Alive and Bloom Bash at The San Diego Museum of Art

Every Spring the San Diego Museum of Art puts on Bloom Bash and Art Alive! You can enjoy flowers both at the museums and at pop-ups around San Diego. Every Friday leading up to the big event they will decorate one corner of San Diego with flowers for everyone to enjoy. They only reveal the location the day it goes up, so hang out on my Instagram and I will reveal the locations one by one!

Here is more info from their website:

Art Alive brings a kaleidoscope of colorful floral arrangements interpreting works of art from the Museum collection, four days of fun-filled events, large-scale art and flower installations, and a garden of activities for families and artists of all ages. Art Alive 2024 celebrates the art of India and will feature a special installation from the Museum’s renowned Edwin Binney 3rd Collection of South Asian paintings.

Art Alive is The San Diego Museum of Art’s signature annual fundraiser, providing essential support for the Museum’s exhibitions, education, outreach, and public programs. Talented floral designers fill the galleries with fragrant arrangements inspired by the Museum collection, offering a brilliantly colored backdrop for a weekend of beloved traditions and art-inspired activities.

Join us April 25-28, 2024, for an immersive dream-like fusion of flowers and art.

Here is the link to buy tickets. Members can enjoy free admission, but will still need to reserve a timed ticket.

2. The Carlsbad Flower Fields

April is the perfect time to visit The Flower Fields in Carlsbad. They are open from early March to early May every year. This is a family-friendly experience and one of the most popular San Diego attractions. You must pre-reserve tickets online. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for kids. Kids under 2 are free. The best time to visit is a weekday morning! On Mondays, kids get free entry.

They have the fields timed to bloom at certain times. My favorite time to visit is the end of March or early April because most are in bloom then!

The tractor ride costs an additional $6 once inside. It tours you around the whole property with the option of being dropped off at the top and walking back down.

Don’t miss the Sweet Pea Maze or Santa’s Playground! The little elf houses are from Santa’s Village, a popular SoCal amusement park that pre-dates Disneyland. A family bought them on auction, refurbished them, and donated them to the Flower Fields for future generations to enjoy.

If you don’t want to pay for admission to The Flower Fields, you can also view them for free from Armada Drive in Carlsbad. This is very close to LEGOLAND and The Carlsbad Strawberry Fields.

You can get tickets here: https://www.theflowerfields.com/

You will need to reserve an entry time. They aren’t super strict about it. We were late last year and nobody cared they just let us in.

3. Beyond Van Gogh at The Del Mar Fairgrounds

This is your last chance to see Beyond Van Gogh and Beyond Monet at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It leaves April 12th!

If you haven’t seen this event, it’s an immersive experience where you can walk through the works of Van Gogh. Would be super great for exposing kids to art in a fun way. They also have the cutest coloring station that my kids loved! Tickets are between $40-$76 depending on which show and the time you choose. Use code MARKET for 15% off.

They are also doing a partnership with The Fish Market next door which I recommend visiting even if you don’t end up doing Beyond Van Gogh. Dishes I recommend at The Fish Market: swordfish, Atlantic salmon, sourdough bread, the kids’ fish and chips (ended up finishing it, it was delicious), and the snickerdoodle brownie. Both are a good time!

You can get 15% off your Fish Market order if you go on the same day as Van Gogh and show your tickets.

4. Aladdin on Broadway

Discover a whole new world at Disney’s ALADDIN, the hit Broadway musical. From the producer of The Lion King comes the timeless story of ALADDIN, a thrilling new production filled with unforgettable beauty, magic, comedy and breathtaking spectacle. It’s an extraordinary theatrical event where one lamp and three wishes make the possibilities infinite.

5. San Diego Zoo Safari Park Baby Tigers

April is the perfect time to visit The Safari Park. We were there last week (March 2024) and they have the CUTEST baby tigers. They are just 8 months old and super friendly. While you’re in the area make sure to visit the Tiger Trail playground! For other live animals in the area, San Diego has the only platypus outside of Australia. They keep the platypus habitat dark so that it will be awake when zoo visitors come to call.

Don’t forget to go on the Africa Tram while you’re there! It’s on the complete opposite side of the park but it is well worth the walk over there. The tram tour is included with admission.

6. LEGOLAND and Dino Valley / Water Park

If you are visiting San Diego for the first time and you have a kid ages 3-12 you MUST visit LEGOLAND. It’s so fun! It’s like Disneyland except with more playgrounds. If you are a local, this is the perfect time to renew or get an annual pass as they are 3 for 1. Here is the link to grab that deal: LEGOLAND Annual Passes 3 for 1 Deal

On March 22nd they opened Dino Land! This is a brand new area of the park specifically for little dino lovers. They redid a few of the rides to give them a dinosaur overlay and you are going to love it! Check out my Instagram post for a sneak peek of from the grand opening!

Here is my post I keep updated with all the most current deals for LEGOLAND: https://sandiegomamas.com/discount-legoland-california-tickets/

7. Color in a New Light at The Fleet Science Center

We just got to test out this exhibit and we LOVED it. It’s upstairs at The Fleet Science Center. You can learn all about color and how it interacts with your world. The kids loved going inside the kaleidoscope tunnel! There are so many interactive elements, all three of my kids were completely enthralled. They’ve also left the giant ball pit from the last rotating exhibit that was there. The ball pit opens at 11 am, be sure to be the first one there as the line gets long quickly.

More info here: https://www.fleetscience.org/experiences/color-new-light

8. Waterfront Park in Downtown San Diego

This park and The Maritime Museum are right next to each other and make a great combo visit. The park has a splash pad and great views of the boats if you don’t want to tour the actual museum. We found metered street parking pretty easily. Don’t miss the B-39 Submarine, the HMS Surprise (used for filming Master and Commander!), the San Salvador, and of course The Star of India!

You can climb all around the ships, touch everything, and even use the periscope in the submarine. Open 10-5 every day. Last entry is at 4 pm. I would expect to spend 2 plus hours there, more if you have a kid who is into boats. $10/kid $20/adult. They do participate in Kids Go Free in October. There are options for add-on pirate boat rides too!

If you would like to browse some other parks, I have a map lovingly made with the help of the moms on my Instagram account. You can find that here: https://sandiegomamas.com/best-parks-in-san-diego/

I would recommend any of the top 35 to visitors.

9. Torrey Pines Hike / Beach Activities

So it’s still a little cold for beach days during April. Hiking is a great way to enjoy the Pacific Ocean without getting wet. This is the most beautiful hike in San Diego. It’s also the most expensive at $20 to park (fee waived with a CA State Parks Pass). Park in the upper parking lot. You’ll drive past the gate and up the hill.

We like the Razor Point Trail. It was 1.3 mi out and back so very doable even if you have to carry your kids part of the way. The terrain is too rough for a stroller. If you want to go further, there are multiple paths down to the beach!

Just be warned, one time we came here and the parking was closed. So we drove on and ended up at Torrey Pines Gliderport. It was fun watching the gliders until we had the bright idea to walk down to the beach from there. Locals, you know where this story is going. At the bottom of Torrey Pines Gliderport is Black’s Beach. Depending on the kind of Spring Break you’re going for, you may want to steer clear of Black’s Beach as it is a nude beach. Luckily we were there on a cold winter day and there was only one naked dude. My kids didn’t notice him and he kept to himself.

You are good to go down to the beach by Torrey Pines hiking area. Just not down from Torrey Pines Gliderport.

10. Cabrillo National Monument Tide Pools in Point Loma

It is amazing weather for tide pooling in April. This is one of our favorite spots to go. By the way, did you know a National Parks Pass will allow you to skip paying for parking here? Otherwise, it’s $15. Be sure to check for low tide times before going. They change daily, so Google the specific day you are planning to go.

11. Family Friendly Shows from ArtPower at UC San Diego

ArtPower at UC San Diego is bringing you all new shows for 2024 and best of all, kids go free! The theater is outdoors, making these events perfect for kids. They have a showing of Animaniacs Live coming up on April 20th.

Link to buy tickets (use code KIDSFREE to access a free kid ticket with an adult ticket).

12. The Cherry Blossom Festival at The Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park

April is the end of cherry blossom season! This is the perfect opportunity to see the best flowers in San Diego. The actual festival is over, but you can catch the blooms through the middle of April. You can check the bloom percentage online before going. Link here: https://www.niwa.org/cbw

We also check in on the blooms from the bridge that overlooks the garden (as you walk from Spreckel’s Organ to Plaza Panama).

Here are my tips for visiting:

  1. Grab a scavenger hunt on your way in. Kids will be into anything with a scavenger hunt!
  2. Spreckel’s Organ Pavilion is the closest free parking lot. However, the parking tram at Balboa Park is fun and free! It lets off at Plaza Panama which is right near the gardens.
  3. The cherry blossoms are at the bottom of the garden. You need to do some switchbacks to get down there, but it is stroller and wheelchair friendly.
  4. We tried out the tea house lunch on our way out because I forgot our food in the car and everyone was hangry. The grilled salmon teriyaki bowl was amazing. Kids got hotdogs from the hotdog stands. You could also venture into North Park or Little Italy for food as they aren’t too far away!
  5. Admission is $12. Kids 5 and under are free. We used our Balboa Park Explorer pass which is ~$230 for a family of 4 for the year and gets you into all the museums in Balboa Park! Worth the price.

I also have a whole blog on visiting the Japanese Friendship Garden with even more pictures! Here is the link to that: https://sandiegomamas.com/cherry-blossom-season-san-diego/

13. Poway Train and Farmer’s Market

This cute train in Poway is such a fun way to spend the weekend! The train runs on Saturdays and Sundays. The first third and fifth weekend the big steam train runs. The second and fourth the little speeder train pictured runs!

Check their website or IG @cityofpoway for updated hours and information. They do close sometimes when they don’t have enough volunteers to run the trains but it’s generally posted in advance. It’s $2.50 a ride OR you can get an annual pass that will cover two adults and four kids for unlimited rides all year.

There’s a little gift shop with a model train that goes when you press a button. We spent a long time in there. The Poway Farmer’s Market next door is great for lunch or try Hamburger Factory Poway for a fun western feel. Get the Ohmn Burger with fried avocado! Make sure to try their old-fashioned milkshakes.

14. Daffodil Days at Julian Farm and Orchard

Julian Farm and Orchard is OPEN Friday, Saturday and Sunday for Daffodil Days. The family-friendly farm offers a variety of fun activities for all ages, including our petting zoo, tractor-pulled hayrides, haybale maze, cider-press demonstrations, a rock-climbing wall, axe throwing, face-painting, crafts area and yard games (activities are seasonal and may not all be available upon your visit, check our pricing page for current activities).

They are located 3 miles west of Julian. Here is my post all about fun things to do in Julian with kids!: https://sandiegomamas.com/things-to-do-in-julian-with-kids/

This is a great place to spend Earth Day!

15. Visit The USS Midway Museum in Downtown San Diego

I highly recommend taking kids to this aircraft carrier turned museum. Here’s what you need to know when visiting with kids.

Kids under 5 are free! There is an audio guide specifically for children. It was a big hit with our kids. This is a touch everything museum meaning kids can sit in the control chairs and press all the buttons to their heart’s content.

All boat exits to the water are very well covered by thick glass and secure fences. There are elevators for strollers but you will have to park your stroller to explore the tunnels of the ships. There is an attendant to watch it.

Our favorite room was the miniature helicopter room with small scale helicopter models right at toddler level. We had a few incidents where one child tried to break free and run back to that room. We also loved the anchor room where our kids had tons of fun climbing on the giant anchor chains. The docents were very kind and answered my children’s very specific questions about plane machinery.

We spent two hours there but we could have easily spent three. Adults are $ 26 / person, but it is possible to upgrade a single day ticket to an annual pass for $ 90 for two adults or $ 160 for four. This museum is included in The San Diego GO Pass.

16. Catch a San Diego Padres game at Petco Park

The San Diego Padres Opening Day is March 28th against The San Francisco Giants! There is also KidsFest on April 21st. If you’ve never been to KidsFest, families can arrive early to the game to enjoy bounce houses, running the bases, face painters, and more. They have a few of them throughout the season. There is also a brand-new playground in Gallhager Square!

This month they will be playing fan favorites The Philadelphia Phillies, The Toronto Blue Jays, The Chicago Cubs, and The Cincinnati Reds. Kids Fest is on April 21st and April 28th. These events are perfect for the whole family.

More info and tickets here: https://www.mlb.com/padres/fans/opening-day

17. Belmont in Bloom at Belmont Park Amusement Park

Belmont Park is such a fun seaside amusement park and one of the best things to do in San Diego. San Diego is known for world-class theme parks, however, my family loves this one because it is always more chill and less expensive than the nearby SeaWorld, especially on school breaks. It’s less crowded than the other theme parks and more budget-friendly as it is free to enter. You have the option to pay per ride or get their unlimited wristband for $60 for adults or $55 for kids.

The wristband covers not only the rides but a large ropes course, laser tag, ziplining and a whole host of other fun activities. You can easily spend a whole day here. Pair it with a visit to the nearby Bonita Cove Park and a sunset on the beach!

Belmont Park has a series of family-friendly events and festivals throughout the year. Their spring festival Belmont in Bloom is so beautiful! They also just reopened their roller coaster after doing some work on it. I hear it’s a smoother ride than it has been previously, so check that out! We love the Beach House restaurant nearby for kid-friendly dining. Just watch to make sure they aren’t having a concert. Those can get crowded and are NOT the Spring Break vibe you’re going for as it’s full of college students.

18. Billy Joel and Sting at Petco Park

These musical legends will be playing one night only on April 13th at Petco Park. General admission is a hefty $260 but it’s sure to be a show to remember.

19. April Pickleball Tournament Share

San Diego’s first inaugural Pickleball Tournament will be on April 19th, 2024 at San Diego Mission Bay Resort (1775 E Mission Bay Dr., San Diego, CA 92109).

The community is invited to join for a fun day by the bay with some friendly competition. Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Popular for its fast pace and exciting nature, the game is accessible to players of all ages and skill levels.

Spectators are welcome to attend and cheer on the players, enjoy complimentary food, and participate in the opportunity drawing to win prizes.

The event is open to players at all skill levels, from first timers to experienced pickleball players. The first session will begin at 9 a.m. with an introductory lesson taught by an experienced pickleball instructor for first-time and novice players.

The lesson will be followed by an interactive game for participants at this level. The second session will begin at 11 a.m. for experienced players. This session’s tournament will be round-robin format, with each competitor playing in turns against each other. Paddles will be provided for all participants.

20. Visit SeaWorld San Diego Seven Seas Food Festival and Beer Garden

This one is for my Seaworld annual pass holders. They have a Seven Seas Food festival which is a popular annual event! Here are the details from their website: Sip and sample your way around the world of international flavors, craft beer, cocktails, and wines, and enjoy live musical performances along the way.

From foodies to families, everyone will find tasty delights among more than 100 food and drink offerings featuring all-new flavors with unique recipes from around the world. Revitalize your taste buds on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays, March 1st – April 28.

21. Kite Flying at Seaport Village

April is great kite-flying weather. Our favorite spots are Seaport Village (where they have an awesome kite store!) or Mission Bay (Tecolote Shores specifically).

22. Water Parks open including Sesame Place and LEGOLAND Waterpark

All of our waterparks are officially open! Because it’s still a little cold, you will likely have the whole waterpark to yourself. I prefer the LEGOLAND Waterpark over Sesame Place because it’s a little smaller and easier to watch my kids. But Sesame Place is great as well!

Link to buy LEGOLAND waterpark tickets

Link for Sesame Place waterpark tickets

23. U-Pick Strawberry Fields

March is when U-Pick Strawberry Season begins. There are two places to pick in San Diego. I prefer Kenny’s Strawberry Farm up in Fallbrook. It’s super cute and very fairly priced. If you don’t want to drive that far there is also Carlsbad Strawberry Company near LEGOLAND.

Carlsbad Strawberry Company: If you choose to do Carlsbad Strawberry Company, go in early March. They get picked over in April. They have a tractor ride and a sunflower maze. The tractor ride is not included but the sunflower maze is.

Buckets are $12. They are small. I didn’t see signs anywhere that said no eating, so I assume the steep price covers sampling. If you just want to enter the field without a bucket it’s $5. Kids 5 and under are free.

It’s right off the freeway so it’s kinda loud and windy. Bring dark clothes you aren’t attached to. I had to throw away their shirts last year because they got so stained. The whole endeavor took maybe 30 minutes so you don’t need a ton of time! You do not need a reservation, you just show up!

Kenny’s: Kenny’s Strawberry Farm in Fallbrook is so cute and a much better value than Carlsbad. They haven’t posted their opening day yet, but I’ll watch for it and let you know on IG. There’s no entrance fee. You only pay for the strawberries you pick and it’s $16 for a large bucket (it’s pretty big!) and $7 for a small one. They said we could fill it to overflowing and if no strawberries dropped it was fair game. Make a free-timed reservation online before going. Link here: https://kennysstrawberryfarm.com/the-farm

No tractor rides or anything else to suck your money away, although they did have some tractors to play on! We brought our scissors for fast picking and it was a good idea. Otherwise, my kids would pull off the stems.

We didn’t see any food for sale here on a weekday but there was strawberry jam which we absolutely bought. The address is 953 Rainbow Way and it’s right off the 15 freeway. The drive was gorgeous too through green mountains going up on either side!

Kenny’s Strawberry Farm from 30 Best Things To Do in San Diego in April 2024 | San Diego Mamas

24. Fallbrook Avocado Festival

Ok, this is one I would love to do this year. On April 21st, get ready for The Fallbrook Annual Avocado Festival. There are guacamole contests, avocado costume contests, Little Miss and Mister Avocado, an avocado holding contest, food vendors, Art of The Avocado competition from local artists, the Avocado 500, food trucks and so much more! There will also be live music and live entertainment. It draws a crowd from all over Southern California and San Diego County. The festival is free to all and sounds like a great time.

More information here: https://www.fallbrookchamberofcommerce.org/avocado-festival/

25. Roar and Snore Safari

This is on my bucket list of things to do in San Diego! You can have a sleepover at one of the best zoos in the United States. Prices start at $160 and go up from there. They have an “all ages” option as well as an adults-only option and a Girl Scout option. This year also includes admission to The Butterfly Jungle! This is one of the best San Diego events.

Here’s the info from their website: Pack up your “trunk” for a sleepover adventure at the Safari Park! All sleepovers include camp activities, an after-hours look at the wild lives of wildlife, guided walks, s’mores around the campfire, dinner, an evening snack, and breakfast the following morning. Choose from several age-appropriate sleepover categories with their own themes.

More info and buy tickets here: https://sdzsafaripark.org/safaris/roar-snore-safaris

26. Solar Eclipse (where to get glasses!)

The solar eclipse is coming on April 8th. You can get glasses from Warby Parker OR from your local library OR from Amazon. We aren’t in the path of totality but it’s sure to be cool still!

Solar Eclipse from 30 Best Things To Do in San Diego in April 2024 | San Diego Mamas

27. Elmo’s Springtacular at Sesame Place

Elmo’s Springtacular at Sesame Place is bursting with furry fun and exciting events! Everyone can enjoy fun-filled rides and splashy water slides, live shows, exciting dance parties and the award-winning Sesame Street Party Parade. Don’t miss special Springtacular activities including Spring Storytime, a Spring Scavenger Hunt and chalk time plus one-of-a-kind photo opps with your Sesame Street friends all dressed up for the season.

For the first time, new friend Blippi visits Sesame Place for a fun-tastic weekend of Meet-and-Greets and an interactive experience at Sesame Street Theater on May 4 – 5!

The Springtacular goes from April 13th-May 19th. Get tickets here.

28. Coronado Flower Show

From April 20-21 experience The Coronado Flower Show! Join us for the 102nd Annual Coronado Flower Show, presented by the Coronado Floral Association and the City of Coronado! The largest tented Flower Show in the U.S. and Coronado’s longest-running tradition, this is a weekend of festivities you don’t want to miss.

Tickets are available at the Front Gate and online. $10 per person. Children 17 and under are admitted free.

Buy tickets here.

Here are all my other ideas of things to do in Coronado!: https://sandiegomamas.com/coronadowithkids/

Our favorite thing to do on Coronado is taking bike ride in front of The Hotel Del!

29. Diary of a Wimpy Kid at the El Prado Theater in Balboa Park

Middle school, ugh. It’s the worst. Greg is determined not to be at the bottom of the popularity chart. He’ll leave that to his weird neighbor, Fregley. Or maybe Greg’s best friend, Rowley Jefferson. But it’s not going to be Greg…no way. Will Greg’s plans lead him to sacrifice his one true friend? Can anyone avoid the dreaded Cheese Touch? Grab a hall pass and don’t be late for an adventure familiar to anyone who actually survived middle school.

Based on the beloved book series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid comes to life in this new musical filled with laughter, adventure and a relatable tale of growing up.

From April 26th-May 31st at The El Prado Theatre in Balboa Park.

Buy tickets here.

30. Disney on Ice at Pechanga Arena

Disney on Ice at Pechanga Arena is so much fun! This version is Mickey themed and it’s here from April 11-14. They have night showings and matinees. Tickets start at $36 and go up from there. Here are my tips from all the times we’ve gone.

  1. There’s a big parking lot around Pechanga Ice Arena and it’s $25. I would not try to park outside of the parking lot. The area can be unsafe.
  2. The show kept all three of my kids’ attention with the frequent special effects, costume changes, and music. Even the baby was mesmerized by the lights!
  3. It was loud in there (both from kids and the show itself) so I felt very at ease with my rowdy crew. I would bring headphones for babies or noise-sensitive kids.
  4. Clear or small bags only. They wouldn’t let me take my big water bottle in and they don’t allow any outside food and drink.

Get tickets here.

31. See Wildflowers in Anza Borrego National Park

The wildflowers in Anza Borrego are going NUTS this year. Make sure to stop at Dudley’s Famous Bakery and Cafe on your way out. We also LOVED the little library here. It’s part of the San Diego City Library system so you can bring your library card and check out books!

Which LEGOLAND California Hotel is Better?: A Review
